3 ON YOUR SIDE (3TV) - An East Valley senior citizen looking to paint her home says she wound up “painting herself into a corner.” That’s because the fake contractor she hired took money up front and then took off.
3 On Your Side went to a rural, East Valley home looking for a fake contractor named Randy Mosher who likes to brag about being a licensed painter. In fact, on his business card, he lists a Registrar of Contractor's license number that isn't even valid.
“He claimed to be a licensed, bonded, contractor,” said Maggie Kirchner.
She hired Mosher to paint her Sun Lakes home. And although it looks great now with a fresh coat of paint, that's only because she had to hire a legitimate painter to do it.
That's because after handing Mosher $1,000 to get started, Kirchner says she had trouble getting him to show up.
“He said, 'Well, I'm behind. It will be another two weeks' and I called him in another two weeks and then he blocked me from his phone,” Kirchner said.
That’s when Kirchner had to move on and found a reputable painter to do the job. But, what about the $1,000 she gave Mosher? That's when she turned to 3 On Your Side for help.
“I watch 3 a lot and I've seen the action Gary gets and that's exactly why I decided to call Gary,” said Kirchner.
Mosher avoided 3 On Your Side's numerous phone calls, so we went to his Queen Creek home for answers. A man who claimed to be Mosher’s friend answered the door and said Mosher wasn’t home. 3 On Your Side asked the friend if Mosher was still doing paint jobs.
“Um, I think so. I haven't seen him or heard of him going on any jobs recently,” said Mosher’s friend.
“Well there's one job he never did, and I have to talk to him about that. He took a lot of money and didn't do any work," said Gary Harper.
Well, Mosher never did contact 3 On Your Side but we're still trying to track him down for answers.
As for Kirchner, she wants homeowners to always verify license numbers, ask for references and do research before ever handing over money upfront.
"I just figure he might be doing this to other people and I think if that's happening, he should be stopped," she said.
After 3 On Your Side’s home visit to Mosher, he did get a hold of Kirchner and promised to pay her back, but that never happened. As of now, a criminal complaint has been filed. If there’s an update, 3 On Your Side will let you know.
