3 ON YOUR SIDE (3TV) - Summer and Dawn Smith say they have a huge problem on their hands. "Here's the license number. Thank God we have that," Summer said as he looked at his contract.

His wife Dawn wasn’t quite as optimistic. "I feel like I was being taken advantage of. I felt like my trust was broke that I had put in them," said Dawn.

Dawn's talking about the company that she and Summer hired called AMPM Home Services.

The company was supposed to do some major renovations at their home, including remodeling a bathroom, doing cement work and painting their entire house inside and out, just to list a few.

The cost for completing all the projects totaled $30,000, and Dawn says she was ready to it get started. "I was. I was really excited," she said.

The Smiths handed over three checks totaling $23,400 to get things going. But according to the couple, the company botched every project they started.

For example, when the company poured the couple's new concrete patio, it cracked in several different places days later.

The company also poured concrete to expand the Smith's driveway.

However, the couple says the expansion joints that were put in are an eyesore because they're crooked and wavy. Cosmetically, the couple says the expansion joints hard to look at. And not only is the driveway also cracking, but Summer also says it's unlevel in one area.

Summer says he raised his concerns but claims AMPM Home Services didn't want to hear it. “They told me, 'Well, that's the way it is. You got to live with it. Too bad,” Summer says he remembers them telling him.

And then there's the bathroom that was being remodeled. The Smiths say almost all the tile was installed crooked, and the flooring was unlevel. “The floor was so bad and on an angle that you couldn't even stand on it without almost falling over," Summer said.

Summer complained, and according to him, AMPM Home Services agreed remove their work and start the bathroom all over. “They just said, ‘You're right.' They said, 'It can't be fixed. It has to be totally redone,'” Summer said.

However, after the bathroom was gutted, the couple says the company never returned, leaving a mess behind. “They have abandoned the job,” Summer told 3 On Your Side. “They walked off and haven't been seen since?” Gary Harper asked. “Have never seen them again,” Summer replied. “But they have your money?" Harper inquired. “Yes, they have my money,” Summer said.

Remember, the Smiths already paid $23,400. So, 3 On Your Side got involved. We discovered AMPM Home Services operates under a contracting license that belongs to AMPM Plumbing.

In other words, they're not licensed to lay concrete, remodel bathrooms or do any of the projects that the Smiths paid them to do. They're only licensed for plumbing.

The Arizona Registrar of Contractors tells 3 On Your Side in an email that, "The agency is aware of the allegations that the licensee is working outside the scope of their license, which will be investigated..."

3 On Your Side spoke to the owner of AMPM Home Services, and he said he would investigate in order to possibly resolve the issue with the Smiths.

But after numerous attempts to reach the owner again through emails and phone calls, 3 On Your Side never heard from him. We went to two different addresses associated with the company, but all we found was a condominium complex and a business center that did not house AMPM Home Services.

Summer and his wife say they feel like they wasted their money. “It's tough to come up with that kind of money,” Summer said. “But, we wanted to put it into our house."

This case is now in the hands of the Arizona Registrar of Contractors, and an investigator has been assigned to look into the Smiths' issue.

When there’s an update, 3 On Your Side will let you know in a follow-up report.
