PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- Tensions between the United States and Iran are shocking and even scary for kids growing up after 9/11. Many have a lot of questions about how the situation in the Middle East will affect their security and their futures.

“I think it’s hard for them because there’s just a barrage of information,” says Basha High School AP Government teacher, Elizabeth Schley. Her job Wednesday was twofold. She provided her students with accurate information and made sure they don’t buy into the panic on social media. The discussion about conflict is an emotional one.

“Acknowledging how they feel and not just brushing it off and then giving them factual information and letting them talk it out has been really really helpful,” says Schley.

Students came to class Wednesday morning with a lot on their minds. “I just come to school and just hear people talking about World War III and the draft, and I wasn’t sure what was happening,” says senior Kate Robinson.

“I plan on going to medical school and becoming a doctor,” says senior Andrew Prouty. “If I’m drafted, then that puts my plans for the future on hold.”

Schley says she puts politics aside to put students at ease, reminding them of what they’ve learned about government processes and checks and balances.

“She [Schley] talked about how only Congress has the power to declare war,” says Prouty.

“We talked about the process it would take to go through the draft and how the draft would work,” says senior Charles Gilbert.

Students say they felt more confident after their discussion with Schley. For one senior, it didn’t change his mind about going into the military once he graduates.Senior Andrew Fernandez says he hopes to enter the Air Force academy.

“If I can go on the line and serve my country and give back for what I’ve been blessed with,” says Fernandez. “I’ll do whatever I need to do.”
