LAVEEN, AZ (3TV/CBS5) -- A former teacher and basketball coach at the Heritage Academy Laveen charter school is accused of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl.
Police say 27-year-old Sean Katz of Avondale was arrested Sunday on charges of assault and sexual conduct with a minor.

The investigation began when a third party called police to report that the teen victim, a student at the school, was "possibly having relations with the defendant," according to the police report.
When the girl's parents asked her about it, police say she initially "denied any involvement" with Katz. But when the parents started going through their daughter's phone, they reportedly found text messages between her and Katz.
Police say Katz called the victim's phone, and the girl's mother answered and "pretended to be the victim," since she had a similar voice as her daughter." The police report states that Katz, at first, said, "he found someone that he wanted to be with, but couldn't," but, when the mother told him it was her, he "apologized and denied the relationship" and "pleaded with the victim's parent not to notify the school or he would lose his job."
The teen victim told police that she and Katz at first had a platonic relationship "until it turned romantic," states the police report. The report also says that the teen told police that she and Katz "held hands, kissed and made out in a classroom office." She also said that Katz allegedly flirted with her, got jealous of other male students, bought her a ring and sent her a picture of his genitals.
According to the police report, Katz "admitted to kissing the victim and having sexual intercourse with her on the table in the classroom office." Police say Katz told the victim's mother he had put in paperwork at the school so he could be transferred. But Katz has already apparently been fired. On Tuesday, the Heritage Academy principal released the following statement:
"Mr. Katz has been terminated and as there is a pending investigation, we have no further comment on this matter."
The school's administration sent an email about the arrest to parents on Monday.
"The School wants to make you aware that one of our teachers, Mr. Sean Katz, was arrested over the weekend for alleged sexual conduct with a minor. The School had absolutely no knowledge of any wrongdoing until we were notified by law enforcement this morning. The School has terminated Mr. Katz’ employment effective immediately and he will not be allowed to return to any Heritage campus. Your students’ safety is of the utmost importance to us. Therefore, if you have any information regarding this matter that you would like to share with the school please contact Mr. Leybas immediately. Alternatively, you may contact City of Phoenix Family Investigations Bureau with the Phoenix Police Department should you have additional details."
The school's website states that Katz taught science and marketing. He has a Bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of Miami in South Florida, and a Master's degree in Biomedical Sciences. (His photo and information have since been removed from the website.)
Katz's bail was set at $10,000. If the bail is posted, the judge orders Katz to be outfitted with an electronic monitoring device. He is due in court Dec. 16 for a status conference and Dec. 18 for a preliminary hearing.
