PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — Friday evening, family members of 34-year-old Lanae Mouton, and 11-month-old Ava Mouton gathered together to remember their loved ones who were killed on Monday. Louis Mouton III is facing two first-degree murder charges in connection to the shooting deaths.
The mother and daughter were taken to the hospital where they died from their injuries.
The family says Lanae Mouton and her husband were high school sweethearts and were together for 16 years, sharing four children. They say it was an abusive relationship, and the two had been separated since 2017. However, Louis would come around to see his children and try to work on their relationship. They say Lanae was in the process of trying to getting a divorce when it came to a tragic end on Monday.
Police say Louis went to see Lanae at her apartment near 83rd Avenue and Thomas Road. At the time, Lanae was holding Ava so she went inside to drop her off. Police said there was a gunshot before Louis kicked open the door and proceeded to shoot and kill her wife and daughter who were hiding in the closet.
"He told us he was going to kill her and he did. He made good on his word," said Lanae's mother Kathey Wheatley. She also lives in the apartment complex. She says Louis would often say if he couldn't have Lanae, no one could.
Family members shared their story hoping others will learn the signs of an abusive relationship and how they can help. "'It's their relationship. We're not going to get in the middle of it.' No, we got to get in the middle of it. We have to stop this type of behavior," said one family member.
Louis told police he suffers from schizophrenia and spirits told him to kill his wife so they could be together. But he never planned on killing his daughter, court documents said.
