PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - A man and a woman are dead after a hunt for a fugitive ended in gunfire involving a DPS trooper and a probation officer in Phoenix on Wednesday afternoon. According to police, Jacob Hernandez, 28, was wanted for a felony. He was spotted in the area of 24th Street and Thomas Road.

DPS investigation at Phoenix hotel

Hernandez was with a woman, identified Thursday as Kenzie Keyes, and when a team of officers approached them around 1:30 p.m., the pair took off, police said. While running, Hernandez took out a gun and shot himself in the head outside the Embassy Suites hotel, police said. Keyes, 30, then picked the gun and pointed it at officers. "They responded to her actions by discharging their duty weapons and striking her," said Phoenix Police Sgt. Andy Williams.

Keyes died at the scene. "This is a complex investigation. We got three police agencies here," he said. No officers were hurt. Williams said no body cameras recorded what happened.

Williams didn't release details about the crime for which Hernandez was wanted, nor did he say how he and Keyes were connected. The investigation is ongoing.
