Alexandra Mendez mugshot

Mendez was booked on one count of leaving the accident with death and one count of manslaughter, according to deputies.

GLENDALE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -- Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies have arrested a woman in connection to a hit-and-run that left a bicyclist dead last month in Glendale.

Twenty-three-year-old Alexandra Mendez was taken into custody on Wednesday for allegedly running over 29-year-old Chris Owan, then driving off. Deputies say the crash happened on Dec. 19, just before 7 p.m., near Northern Avenue and Reems Road.

Owan was riding his bike to his new job at Glendale's Amazon Fulfillment center when Mendez reportedly ran him over, leaving Owan on the side of the road. Court documents obtained by Arizona's Family revealed Mendez was driving around 56-57 miles per hour on Northern Avenue.

Bystanders spotted Owan on the ground and called 911, but he later died. MCSO later released photos of a 2017-2018 Ford Fusion that may have been involved but didn't know who the driver was at the time.

Authorities were later able to track down Mendez after a vehicle belonging to her was spotted abandoned on Christmas Day. MCSO said the vehicle had damage that appeared to be caused by a car versus bicycle crash.

Investigators also learned that Mendez had been at the Coyote Cabaret, and had drank at least 5 alcoholic beverages while there. A witness told police she was in the car alone when she left the bar.

Mendez has been booked on suspicion of leaving the accident with death and suspicion of manslaughter, according to deputies. The investigation is ongoing.
