CHANDLER, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) – Police believe the driver in a deadly single-car crash in Chandler might have been impaired and speeding. The wreck happened shortly after 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening at Gilbert and Chandler Heights roads.
Police say a vehicle heading north on Gilbert Road veered east and slammed into a traffic pole at the northwest corner of the intersection. Aerial video shows the firetrucks at the scene. The driver, a woman in her 20s, was injured. Her passenger, a man in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the hospital. Investigators have not released the names of either person.
After hitting the pole, the car hit a second vehicle. Nobody in that car was hurt, police said.
According to Sgt. Jason McClimans of the Chandler Police Department, investigators believe speed and impairment were factors in the crash. No arrests have been made at this time.
