TEMPE, AZ (3TV/CBS5) - Gerald Goins' time here in Arizona has not been all that great. Last week, his son, who was also his caregiver, took off with all of his money leaving him without a way of getting back home and essentially stranded at the Western Lodge Motel in Tempe.

“It’s been hard for me to live in a place where I can’t get out and run and eventually I hope to get a greasing these knees,” said Goins. That's when April Alt, who manages the motel, contacted Arizona's Family for help saying Gerald was weeks behind in payment but she couldn't bring herself to put him out.

After Arizona's Family aired his story, Goins has received thousands of dollars in donations. “At first there was a $40 donation then $50 and we were like okay we got something, that’s good,” said Alt. But Goins’ wish to get back to his home in Zanesville, Ohio was looking more like a reality by this morning when the total on the GoFundMe Page reached well over $20k.

Not only have people donated online but they've even showed up out here at the motel offering airline vouchers,” said Alt.

People like James Waters who saw the story and felt compelled to help. “That's me I help people out all the time, you know I see someone stranded on the side of the road, I give them a ride and go get some cash , that's how everyone should be,” said Waters.

“I am grateful, you know, I never suspected anything like this, I thought I was going to have to get a thumb ride out of here or something,” said Goins.

Adult Protective Services visited with Goins this morning. In the meantime, Alt is hoping to use the extra cash, to set Goins up, in a little more comfortable accommodations. "So now because we've gotten the money we are looking into adult care facilities for him, that's what we really needs,” said Alt.
