PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- The Costco at Christown Spectrum mall in Phoenix is shutting down this year.Multiple employees at the 19th Avenue and Bethany Home Road location confirmed the warehouse would shut down this fall.
One employee, who did not want to named, told Arizona’s Family that Costco called a meeting with employees a few weeks ago and announced they would be closing the Christown location in the fall.
The employee said the company asked employees to provide them with a list of the stores they wanted to transfer to and they were going to try and accommodate their requests. He said employees were being “taken care of very well.”
Even though employees seem to be in the know, most of the customers we spoke with were not.
“I think it’s horrible, it’s in a great location and too convenient,” said one customer.
Another customer, Erin Riley, had already heard the store was apparently closing, after someone posted it in her Nextdoor App.
“I probably heard two or three weeks ago that they were closing. I think it’s going to be a bummer for Christown, Costco draws a lot of people and I don’t think they will be coming here as much,” said Riley.
Why is Costco closing this location? Arizona's Family reached out to Costco for more information. A spokesperson for Costco corporate communications released the following statement, “Management has no comment at this time. We appreciate your interest and support of Costco Wholesale.”
Kimco Realty, the owner and operator of Christown, declined to comment when asked about the closure and future plans for the space.
There are 13 Costco locations in the Phoenix area. For Christown shoppers, the nearest location will be at 44th Street and Thomas Road or 45th Street and Cactus Road. There is also a Costco Business Center at 33rd Avenue and Indian School Road.
