CHANDLER, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) - A JCPenney in Chandler has been cleared after is was evacuated Saturday afternoon due to a false alarm about an active shooter, police said.

The incident was reported around 2 p.m. at a JCPenney Gilbert and Germann roads, according to the Chandler Police Department.

Police said dispatchers were informed of the situation by Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. An off-duty deputy was shopping in the store when the deputy overheard a conversation between store employees about a possible shooter in the store. The deputy advised the employee to contact a supervisor and follow their protocol while the deputy called 911.

Police said nothing suspicious was found at the store.

Police said earlier once the scene is clear the store will reopen.
