PEORIA, AZ (3TV/CBS5) -- It's the holiday season, which means two things, people will be shopping and car burglars will be on the prowl. So it's up to you to make it harder for the thieves by not leaving anything visible in your cars.

[WATCH: Holiday shopping tips to help you keep your things safe]

Stanley Roberts spent time with Peoria Police trying to educate drivers on how to leave there cars virtually empty inside. This included purses, backpacks and even garage door openers. The reason the garage door opener is included is because if a thief enters your car, not only will they have your garage remote, they could also have access to your vehicle registration which has your home address.

The campaign suggests: Take your keys, remove your valuables, and lock your vehicle. You might be surprised how many cars are targeted simply because the door was never locked.
