PHOENIX -- Have you ever told someone that it's so hot outside that you could fry an egg on the sidewalk?

Today we found out if it could really be done.

With temperatures peaking at 116 degrees, it may not have been a good day to catch some rays, but it was beneficial for some solar-cooking.

We had an egg, a can of soup, a grilled-cheese sandwich and cookies out on our sidewalk to see how long it takes for them to cook. Based on viewers' requests, we added bacon, a potato and popcorn to our little buffet.

Here are the results of how long it took each item to cook:

Egg: Evaporated after 2 hours

Soup: Only reached luke-warm

Open potatoes: Reached half-browned after 1 hour, never cooked further

Baked potato: Browned inside, did not cook further

Grilled-cheese sandwich: Toasted after 6 hours

Cookies: Never fully cooked

Popcorn: Did not pop

Bacon: Cooked fully after 4 hours, but didn't taste as good!

Check out the hour-by-hour updates from earlier:

10:00 a.m: Air temp 102°. Food laid out.

11:00 a.m: Air temp 102°. Addition of potatoes and bacon. Egg whites evaporated, cookies gaining composure. Tomato soup and grilled cheese have made no changes.

12:00 p.m: Air temp 106°, ground temp 152.3°. Open potatoes half-browned, egg completely evaporated, cookies continuing to bake, grilled cheese lightly toasting, soup warming. Bacon and baked potato have made no changes.

1:00 p.m: Air temp 110°, ground temp 155.9°. Addition of popcorn. Soup luke-warm, bacon beginning to brown. No other changes.

2:00 p.m: Air temp 113°, ground temp 170.8°. Bacon almost fully cooked. No other changes.

3:00 p.m: Air temp 114°, ground temp 171.9°. Soup remains luke-warm, cookies staying moist. Bacon cooked completely, was taste-tested by sportswriter Brad Denny, who said that it was "tough" and had the consistency of "beef jerky." No other changes.

4:00 p.m: Air temp 116°, ground temp 168.8°. We suspect the ground temperature decreased slightly because it's now partially cloudy outside. Grilled cheese became lightly toasted and very dry. Cookies are mushy, but maintaining shape. Soup slightly hot. No other changes.

5:00 p.m: 115°, ground temp 165.4°. Final results -- egg is wilted, soup remains luke-warm, open potatoes stopped at half-browned, baked potato browned inside, grilled-cheese sandwich remained lightly toasted, cookies remained moist, popcorn did not pop, and bacon cooked fully (though it didn't taste as good).
