AZ Senate president is former $10M sweepstakes winner

AZ state Senate President Andy Biggs is a former Publisher's Clearinghouse winner

He's one of Arizona's most powerful state legislators and is now running for Congress. But state Senate Pres. Andy Biggs, R-Gilbert, made headlines long before he ever took office.

The longtime lawmaker won $10 million from Publisher's Clearinghouse 24 years ago. He was even in a 1993 commercial, receiving congratulations from Dick Clark and Ed McMahon.

Biggs doesn't publicly discuss hitting the jackpot, and his winnings haven't seemed to impact his political career.

Will that change now he in running for Congress?

His campaign office released this statement:

"Senator Biggs has been overwhelmingly re-elected by his constituents in the East Valley for more than a decade because the voters know him to be a principled public servant who always puts the best interests of his community and the taxpayers of Arizona first. His proven record as a strong conservative and a champion of the taxpayer is one of the many reasons his colleagues elected him as their President, and will be one of the many things highlighted during his campaign to replace Congressman Salmon in Arizona's Fifth Congressional District."

Political expert Jaime Molera doesn't believe voters care that Biggs is a multimillionaire.

"Let's face it, he has multiple degrees from BYU, a master's at ASU, a law degree from U of A, and had his own law practice beforehand," Molera. "He's been a public servant for lots of years and I think that's the record they're going to focus on."

On Monday, a rally was held at the Arizona state Capitol urging Biggs and other lawmakers to lift the freeze on KidsCare and provide health insurance to thousands of low-income Arizona children.

Biggs said that his big winnings have nothing to do with his opposition to KidsCare.

"I'd say that's probably an unfortunate analogy you're raising, because the reality is, we're still talking about taxpayers," he said.

Biggs isn't the only millionaire state lawmaker. Sens. Steve Pierce and Bob Worsley also are on the list.Copyright 2016 KPHO/KTVK (KPHO Broadcasting Corporation). All rights reserved.
