PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- The Arizona Department of Transportation is holding a public meeting to discuss a proposed upgrade to parts of Interstate 10.

The meeting is set to take place Feb. 26 at the Rio Salado College Conference Center at 2323 W. 14th Street in Tempe.

The topic that will be discussed is a possible upgrade project of I-10 between the Interstate 17 “Split” interchange and the Loop 202 Santan Freeway, which crosses Phoenix, Tempe, Guadalupe and Chandler.

ADOT wants to improve an 11-mile stretch of I-10, between 24th Street and Ray Road, including the Broadway Curve.

According to ADOT, that portion of the I-10 handles more than 40 percent of freeway traffic in the region, which results in heavy congestion.

To improve traffic, ADOT wants to add a second HOV lane in each direction between the Salt River bridges, just west of U.S. 60. They also want a new collector-distributor roadway system that would "funnel traffic to local and express lanes to improve traffic flow."

The project also includes the reconstruction of the I-10 and State Route 143 interchange to improve access to and from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. In addition, ADOT wants to improve U.S. 60 near the junction with I-10.

ADOT added that the funding for the project will be allocated through the Maricopa Association of Governments’ Regional Transportation Plan approved by voters in 2004.

If improved, construction for the project could begin in early 2021.

For anyone who can't attend the Feb. 26 meeting, ADOT said the public can send comments or input on the Broadway Curve project to them by April 1.

I cannot understand why the public meetings. They will skerw (they will not allow me to spell it properly) it up anyway, like more dead end lanes that should be exit only lanes. Some of them are on 60, Higley in Mesa, McKellips, and 202 at Dobson. Great way to keep the cops busy at wrecks and allow idiots to whip into that right lane, hit the gas, and cut off other cars.

By the way, one of those dead end lanes on Higley at Main murdered a young man and left a little girl without a daddy.

What a nightmare that construction will be! How about start widening the I-10 between Phoenix to Casa Grande ASAP !!!!!

Could not agree with you more...on both counts! And adding another carpool lane, why? How will that relieve congestion?

It will force more people into car pool lanes. When slow now, there is no incentive to carpool. It's a bit tricky with the offramp on the left to the 60.
