A Marcos de Niza High School student was arrested Friday for allegedly starting a fire in a school bathroom.
Around 1:30 p.m., a security guard saw black smoking coming from a men's restroom on the northwest side of the campus, which is near Rural and Guadalupe roads in Tempe.
The school's fire alarm was activated and the campus was evacuated.
Tempe firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, and the damage was contained to the restroom. No injuries were reported.
Investigators from the Tempe Police Department and the Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department determined the fire to be an act of arson.
Police said their follow-up investigation, which included examining evidence at the scene, led them to arrest a 15-year-old male student around 4:30 p.m.
He was booked on one count each of arson of an occupied structure, criminal damage, endangerment and disruption of an educational institution.
