PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- It has been two decades – 20 years – since September 11th when 4 planes were hijacked and hit the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania, killing thousands of Americans.

Many people remember the exact moment when the learned of the news and it is something they will never forget, while many others lost loved ones. To honor those people, there are events around the Valley to commemorate the 20-year anniversary.

1. September 11th Healing Field Memorial

To honor those killed on September 11, 2001, Tempe will be hosting three different events at Tempe Beach Park throughout the weekend including a reading of the victim's names.

Where: Tempe Beach Park

When: September 10 through 12


  • Evening Freedom Concert – Friday at 6:30 p.m.
  • Healing Field Tribute – Saturday at 5:30 a.m. – Names of the victims to be read at 5:46 a.m.
  • Candlelight Vigil – Saturday at 7 p.m.
  • Tunnel to Towers 5K Run/Walk – Sunday at 7:30 a.m.

2. 20th Anniversary of 9/11 event

Peoria, Glendale, and Sun City are coming together on 9/11 to honor the heroes and victims of the terror attacks 20 years ago. Drivers are invited to leave messages and pass under a large American flag that will be hanging by two ladder trucks.

Where: 83rd Avenue and West Mariners Way

When: Saturday at 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

3. 9/11 National Day of Service

Volunteers in Phoenix can help pack meals on September 11th. Must be pre-registered and have proof of COVID-19 vaccination in order to volunteer.

Where: Phoenix Convention Center North Building, Hall A

When: Two-hour shifts at 8 a.m., 11 a.m., and 2 p.m. on Saturday

4. Stories Behind the Stars Workshop

The Stories Behind the Stars Workshop is an event to honor casualties of World War II but also September 11th as part of the National Day of Remembrance and Service. Stories Behind the Stars and Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are working to put the event together. It is open to the public.

Where: 26023 S Lemon Avenue in Queen Creek

When: Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

5. Tower Challenge

In honor of those who lost their lives on September 11th, people are coming together to climb 110 floors and 2071 steps inside Gila River Arena. Firefighters will be in full gear. Police, military and bomb squad personnel will also be there.

When: Saturday at 6 a.m. to 11 a.m.

6. National Day of Service and Remembrance

Volunteer at the National Cemetery on Friday to help beautify the grounds of fallen heroes buried there. Dress code is casual but be respectful, no open toed shoes or tank tops, etc. 

Where: National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona at 23029 N Cave Creek Road in Phoenix

When: Friday at 10 a.m.

7. Gilbert 9/11 Memorial Ceremony

Gilbert fire and rescue along with Gilbert police will be paying tribute to the lives lost and to pay tribute to the brave first responders with a ceremony and Tribute in Light Saturday evening.

Where: 9/11 Memorial Plaza at 50 E Civic Center Drive in Gilbert. Water Tower Plaza 45 W Page Avenue in Gilbert. 

When: Saturday. Ceremony starts at 6 p.m. and Tribute in Light is 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
