36 Below drinks and bar

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- A recently-opened underground speakeasy in Phoenix is hosting a grand opening celebration next week.

36 Below

36 Below, a fully-immersive cocktail lounge, is the new re-imagined experience for adult beverage enthusiasts in the former UnderTow space below Sip Coffee and Beer Garage in the Arcadia district. To celebrate, owners are hosting a grand opening party on July 23, including a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego around 6:30 p.m. There will also be a DJ, giveaways, and food and drink specials.

The owners of Sip, Josh Katz and Maurice "Moe" Murillo, and Sheldon Wiley are the innovative minds behind the new virtual destination. 36 Below is designed as a Walipini speakeasy; meaning, an underground greenhouse bar. According to the owners, this is the first of its kind in Phoenix -- and the country!

"We wanted to create a new, completely unique concept that allows guests to escape reality and indulge their senses," said Katz.

The speakeasy, which opened on June 22, will take guests to a new location each season by using wall-to-wall video screens and audiovisual effects. The first experience guests can expect is Flagstaff, paying homage to one of Katz's favorite spots in the state and his college days at Northern Arizona University.

The owner's vision for 36 Below was brought to life by House of Form, which designed a 600-square foot lounge interior to host a lush garden of various plants and flowers. The menu features inventive and unique cocktails and a selection of curated snacks, many of which are plant-based.

"Our menus will be innovative and represent who we are by capturing the essence of our vision with a modern spin on the simplicities of nature's offerings," said Wiley.

36 Below will also have a private event space called the Rose Garden, which can be accessed through a secret door for small gatherings of up to 12 people. The Rose Garden is expected to open in a few months. For more information on 36 Below, click here.

Reservations are required due to the space and last for 90-minute windows so that others can come and enjoy the speakeasy as well. If possible, 36 Below recommends using rideshare services to help alleviate parking. Groups that don't show up within 15 minutes of their reservation time will forfeit their table and be charged $25 per person. To receive a full refund, you must cancel at least 12 hours before your reservation time. For more information on booking a reservation, click here.
