Crews from multiple departments were called to the scene. Gilbert Fire was assisted by Mesa, Chandler, Phoenix and Superstition fire departments. More than 40 fire trucks responded, and 120 firefighters were on scene fighting the flames.

One firefighter suffered burns to his hands. Four Gilbert police officers suffered smoke inhalation.

Evacuations were ordered from Civic Center Drive to Nunneley to Devon. Those in that area were urged to leave. Gilbert's Public Safety Amphitheater (75 E. Civic Center Drive) was opened for evacuees.

The apartment complex is located at 166 E. Civic Center Drive, which is near Warner and Gilbert roads. The complex was reportedly in the framing stages and the wood was burning fast and furiously.

The buildings caught fire around 6 p.m. Saturday.

Fire officials say the strong winds actually fanned the flames and spread embers to a nearby house, which also caught fire.

Flames and smoke could be seen for miles away.

The name of the complex is the Broadstone Gilbert Heritage. It has several hundred units.
