PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- "Changing lives by loving our students and serving our community" - that's the mission statement at East Valley Institute of Technology and that's exactly what Paula Corbin is doing.
The EVIT educator has just been voted by East Valley Tribute Readers as Best High School Teacher in the East Valley.
Paula has been teaching for 20 years, the last three years at EVIT. She teaches 11th and 12th graders across the East Valley Early Childhood Development and Education Classes. Her students get hands-on experience at local daycares and preschools.
Paula joined EVIT and re-established the program. Guiding her students, Paula recently secured full scholarships for all of her 17 students enrolled in dual enrollment classes through Mesa Community College.
While in Paula's class, students can earn college credit and if completed, they get an entry level certificate to go into the field of Early Childhood Development and Education. Her students are getting scholarships to pay for 100% of their classes - including tuition, fees and textbooks.
"I love what I do, and that love is always coming back to me..." said Paula. "The best feeling is having graduated students come back and visit or call and let me know how their life is going." She tells her students, "My job is to set you up for a great life."
Paula's most recent accomplishment involves laying the groundwork to bring a Head Start Preschool to their campus!
EVIT students will get a chance to intern and even get a job there after graduating. Paula is most certainly changing lives and that is Something Good!
