ALTOONA, IA (KCCI) -- Mackenzy Larson has had cancer for eight years, but the 17-year-old Southeast Polk student didn't let that stop her from going to prom.

"I've always wanted to go to prom because of all those high school movies where you see every body, like, having the time of their life at prom ... I wanted that, too," said Larson.

The school dance meant a lot to Larson because she's been diagnosed with cancer for the seventh time, and doctors say it's inoperable.

"She missed out on so much and missed out on the other dances and stuff, and she's like, 'I'm not missing out on this one,'" said Deana Taylor, Larson's mom.

Larson's best friend, Lauren Kuehl, traveled from out of state to attend prom with her.

The two met when they both had cancer.

"Kenzy is the person that is always there for you no matter what, and she can make you smile on any day, any day," said Kuehl.

"Kenzy's very special. She's gotten us through a lot. She means the world (to us)," said Renee Kuehl, Lauryn Kuehl's mom.

The community came together to escort Larson and her friends to prom.

Larson's doctors are trying to slow the progression of her cancer.

She finished radiation Friday and will have a procedure Monday, but on Saturday night, Larson said she's just focused on having fun.
