(Meredith) — A man from Moorhead, Minnesota was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison Wednesday for a felony assault on his two-month-old daughter.

Shawn Michael Foltz, 32, pleaded guilty in June to third-degree felony assault of a victim under the age of four.

Court records show the abuse included rubbing hot sauce and cayenne pepper in the infant's mouth, nose and eyes, snapping a towel at her eyes and head and blocking her airway until she turned blue.

Court records show the abuse occurred in April 2017 and May 2017. Documents revealed in an interview with police, Foltz said the baby's injuries were caused by him snapping a towel at her face and hitting her with a wooden spoon.

Foltz told police he was frustrated with the baby's crying and said he would think of ways to harm the baby while he was at work, according to court records.

In Clay County District Court on Wednesday, Foltz was sentenced to 30 months, or 2.5 years, in prison. According to WDAY, he is required to spend at least 20 of those months in prison and is eligible to spend the remaining 10 months under supervised release. Foltz is also required to pay more than $6,000 in restitution.

Belinda Bailer, Foltz's now-divorced wife, told the judge she felt she did not know the man she was married to. WDAY reports Bailer and Foltz were married for five years.

The couple's daughter who was assaulted is now healthy and active. The couple also has a four-year-old son, who Bailer told the judge is also a victim because he witnessed Foltz's abusive actions and now sees a therapist for emotional damage.

Moorhead, Minnesota is located five minutes east of Fargo, North Dakota, just across the state border.
