CVS expands nasal spray recall due to microbiological contamination

(Meredith) – Nasal sprays sold at CVS pharmacies nationwide are being recalled over fears they may contain a microbiological contaminant.

Product Quest Manufacturing announced its voluntary recall of Lot# 173089J of CVS Health 12 Hour Sinus Relief Nasal Mist due to a finding of microbial contamination identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Out of an abundance of caution, Product Quest has decided to expand the recall to include all lots of nasal products and baby oral gels currently within expiration that were manufactured at the company’s Florida facility.

There is no known microbial contamination associated with the nasal products and baby oral gels that are the subject of this expanded recall.

Product Quest initiated the recall Wednesday over concerns the medicine could be contaminated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa – a bacteria that can be life-threatening for patients with cystic fibrosis or weakened immune systems.

Healthy people who become infected with the bacteria may also develop a mild illness, like an ear infection or skin rash, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Originally, the recall was only for Lot# 173089J of CVS Health 12 Hour Sinus Relief Nasal Mist. Out of an abundance of caution, the recall has been expanded to include all lots of nasal products and baby oral gels that were manufactured at the company's Florida facility.

There is no known microbial contamination of these products in the expanded recall; the recall is simply out of an abundance of caution.

There have been no reports of adverse events related to the recalled products.

Consumers who purchased these nasal sprays are advised to throw them away or return them to CVS.
