A young woman in Ahwatukee is about to make her country proud. She just found out she will be competing in the Junior Olympics in Italy in a little more than a week. Because of the financial burden, she is crowdfunding her way there.
Macy Eide has been playing hockey since seventh grade. Her favorite position is goalie.
"A lot of the game is on you. You either win or lose the game and I like having that pressure," she said.
She's already been accepted to Arizona State University's ice hockey team. But to go for gold, she'll be competing in inline hockey.
"The technique is so different, having to transition, the wheels can catch and you go flying into the boards," Eide said. "When I first started this, the boards were my friends."
Not only does Eide have to buy hundreds of dollars in equipment, but now she's responsible for the airfare, lodging and food for Italy.
"That's also why I got two jobs, to help out my parents and definitely fund this dream because this has been a dream for a long time," Eide said.
Thirty hours a week at those two jobs, plus 30 more at the rink, doesn't leave much time for anything else. Her GoFundMe is helping, along with the kindness of former teammates. After all, you can't put a price on representing your country.
"The name on the front is way more important than the name on my back, So I'm just going to fight for my team and go for my team and protect them like they're family and make it the best experience," Eide said.
