SURPRISE, AZ (AZFamily) — A man is dead after police say he mishandled a firearm and shot himself in the head overnight in Surprise.

Surprise police officers responded to the incident just after midnight on Friday at a home near Bullard Avenue and Old Oak Lane, south of Waddell Road.

At the home, officers were directed to a bedroom with a man who had a gunshot wound to his head. They immediately started life-saving attempts, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, Surprise police said.

No one else was injured in this incident, police said, and everyone at the home remained on the scene and cooperated with authorities.

Surprise police said an initial investigation found the man mishandled the weapon, resulting in an accidental discharge that struck him in the head.

There were no threats to the area.

Surprise police spokesperson Rick Hernandez wanted to remind gun owners to always carefully practice responsible gun safety and follow the following rules:

  • Always treat every firearm as if it was loaded.
  • Always keep the muzzle of a firearm pointed in a safe direction.
  • Always keep your finger off the trigger.
