Phoenix proposes new homeless shelter on city’s westside
PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — The City of Phoenix is proposing a new homeless shelter on its southwest side before the summer brings dangerously hot temperatures to the Valley.
The city owns the proposed site near 71st Avenue and Van Buren Road. Right now, It’s awaiting permit approval to start sheltering people who live on the streets.
The Office of Homeless Solutions has said the shelter and navigation center will expand around 300 new beds out of the 790 that the Office wants to add in 2024 and again in 2025.
Residents nearby have reportedly voiced their concerns regarding safety, especially with a school half a mile away. However, the city, trying to quell those concerns, said the property is a closed campus, will have 24/7 security, and has a code of conduct.
Additionally, the city said it’s been receiving feedback and working with the school and community leaders about the plan. The city had a permit approval hearing on Feb. 22 but asked for a continuance to continue working with the community.
Residents who have any questions or concerns about the proposed shelter are encouraged to contact the Office of Homeless Solutions.
