Prater, Murray put Arizona Cardinals back on track, defeating Dallas Cowboys 25-22
ARLINGTON, TX (3TV/CBS 5) -- The Cardinals are back on track as the regular season dwindles, defeating the Dallas Cowboys 25-22 on Sunday afternoon. Quarterback Kyler Murray threw for 263 yards and two touchdowns, while wide receiver Antoine Wesley caught two touchdowns. Cardinals kicker Matt Prater was perfect with four field goals and one extra point. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott threw for 226 yards and three touchdowns.
On the Cardinals first drive, a deep connection from Murray to A.J. Green for 42 yards set up the field goal for Prater, giving the Red Birds a early 3-0 lead. Cowboys kicker Greg Zuerlein attempted to tie the game at three apiece, but sailed wide left for the missed kick.
Cardinals pulled some trickery to open up the second quarter. A fourth and two fake punt turned into a potential catch of the year after Cardinals safety Chris Banjo sent a pass sailing to running back Jonathan Ward, who went up for the one-handed grab over Cowboys cornerback Nahshon Wright to complete the catch.
After pulling off the fake punt, Murray and the Cardinals pushed to the Cowboys one-yard line with 5:27 left in the second quarter. A short pass to Antoine Wesley put the Cardinals up 10-0. However, Prescott and the Cowboys would not go down without a fight. A 21-yard pass from Prescott to Michael Gallup put the Cowboys back into the game, 10-7. Gallup was slow to get up though, and was injured on the play. Gallup did not return to the game.
Prater came in clutch once again as time expired in the half. Prater sent a 53-yard field goal sailing through the uprights, giving the Cardinals a 13-7 lead at halftime.
To break open the third quarter, the Red Birds were eager to make a statement. Christian Kirk cut outside along the sideline to complete a 43-yard pass from Murray. A few plays later, Murray found the connection to Wesley again, who hauled in his second touchdown of the day after a 19-yard pass. The Cardinals opted to go for the two point conversion, but were unsuccessful, putting the score at 19-7.
Prescott and the Cowboys attempted to stage a comeback in the fourth quarter. A quick 2-yard pass from Prescott to Cedrick Wilson Jr. cut the lead to 22-14. However, Cardinals defense came roaring back, forcing the fumble against Prescott and giving the Red Birds another chance to solidify the lead. A couple plays later, Prater sailed one through the uprights for his fourth field goal of the day, giving the Cardinals a 25-14 lead.
Prescott and the Cowboys weren’t done. With the help of a little trickery, the Cowboys completed a lateral from Wilson to Tony Pollard for the 31-yard completion. Prescott then completed a short pass to Amari Cooper for the touchdown, and the Cowboys decided to go for the two point conversion. A successful attempt from Prescott to Wilson cut the lead to 25-22, with the Cardinals only up by three.
However, the comeback came up just short, and the Cardinals pulled through to snap their three game losing streak, defeating the Cowboys 25-22. The Red Birds will travel back home to Glendale to take on the Seattle Seahawks next Sunday at 2:25 p.m for the regular season finale.
