PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - This week we decided to Pay It Forward to Elizabeth Wunsch, who is the volunteer coordinator for the André House. The André House is an important asset to people that are homeless in downtown Phoenix.
“It’s really a lot of fun to work with her. She has a really great laugh, just a wonderful personality. She really cares for the community and our volunteers,” said her coworker Melia Smith.
Wunsch has worked for André House for four years, and the place is incredible. They cook meals, hand out clothing, provide showers to those in need and so much more. It has been a rough year because of the pandemic, but because of her hard work, her staff wanted to Pay It Forward to her.
Volunteer Barbara Lehman is the one who nominated Wunsch. “I think she is going to flip; I think there will be tears and she won’t know what to do because who would. This is a total - total surprise,” said Lehman.
So, Lehman and I walked up to the Andre House and waited for Wunsch to come into the room. Then she walked in. “Ladies and gentlemen - Miss Elizabeth,” I said. Then about two dozen volunteers started cheering.
Lehman handed her the gift card. “Look at this, everyone loves you - I nominated you for this Pay It Forward award for all you do to keep things running,” she said.
Lehman was right. She flipped. “I can’t believe this. Thank you, everybody. It has been an honor and a privilege to be here with all of you. All of you kept us going and made sure our guests are all fed every day and get some services every day. This is what keeps me going here. This is an incredible group here,” said Wunsch.
