PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- A man has been arrested after allegedly running over and killing a woman in Phoenix early Sunday morning.

Phoenix police say it happened around 2:41 a.m. near 20th Street and Camelback Road. When officers arrived on scene, they found a woman, later identified as 47-year-old Barbara Ann Brown, who had been run over. Brown was taken to the hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Ann Justus says the suspect, 23-year-old Isaac Wences Najera, turned north onto 20th Street from Highland Avenue, where he crossed the center line across three southbound lanes of traffic, drove over a curb and onto the sidewalk where he allegedly ran over Brown, who was sleeping. The truck kept going, hit a pole, and drove off.

According to court documents, Phoenix officers found Najera’s white Chevrolet Silverado at a home near 18th Street and Bethany Home Road with Najera laying in the passenger seat with the driver side door open. Najera struggled with officers briefly and was detained. Police say officers saw blood under the truck and the front left corner bumper was damaged. Najera reportedly admitted to driving the truck, and said he had been drinking and smoking marijuana earlier in the night.

Najera is facing charges of manslaughter and leaving the scene of a deadly crash. According to Justus, impairment charges are pending as officers wait for test results to come back.
