On the afternoon of December 27th, 2009, a hiker on Piestewa Peak was air-lifted from the summit after suffering a head injury and dislocated shoulder from a fall. The Fire Department rescue team was unable to move the victim to the lower landing pad, and chose to fly him directly off the summit in a basket carried up by the crew. He was successfully lifted into the helicopter, and brought down to the parking lot where an ambulance was waiting to take him to the hospital.
