Coast to Coast Walk: Dedicated to Senior Citizens, Disabled Americans & Veterans, 70 year old senior citizen Al Slusser started his trek by walking out of the Pacific Ocean in San Diego, California on October 1st 2009 and hopes to arrive 2500 miles down the road, get his feet wet in the Atlantic Ocean and end at his destination, Washington, DC within a year. He is pulling a homemade wagon made for him by a good friend. Al’s daughter teaches grade school and her class named the wagon “Eagle”. The aluminum box carries all his bedding and supplies as he walks the side of the road.
A back injury from his youth has not slowed Al’s walking down. He is currently walking roads along side Interstate 8 and has walked to Yuma, Arizona. Al can be contacted at: 928-451-6859
Al is seeking a document with an official seal from the cities he passes through to document his walk across the United States. He received a letter and seal from the mayor of San Diego and a proclamation of support from the mayor of his hometown.
Wednesday, August 5th:
Al Slusser makes the front page news in the Verde Valley! Probably the first in many media appearances, as Al's walk becomes public knowledge. "I'm definitely not doing it for the attention" Al says with a straight face. "I just want to do something that will make a difference, if people get behind this I know I'm doing something right."
At the city counsel meeting on Tuesday, September the 17th, Al was presented with an official City Proclamation of support from his hometown, Cottonwood, Arizona. Mayor Diane Joens handed him the certificate voicing the full support and encouragement of the city.
