Tonto Creek Flooding, Residents Isolated

Tonto Basin Residents on the East Side of Tonto Creek are now isolated. Tonto Creek that is normally a dry river bed is now a river about one-mile wide and flowing today at a rate of 5800cf per second, and at about four-plus feet deep in several places. Two residents that tried to cross on Sunday morning had the creek take their vehicles; one a small SUV and the other a large pick-up. Back in 2010, this same area flooded and residents were isolated for several weeks. Groceries, Medications had to be boated across (See Payson Roundup stories from this time). The area was last known that a Bridge across the creek was slated to be built. It is believed that the Engineering and Impact studies have already been completed. However, Federal Funding is now the delaying factor. With Snow still up on the rim, it is anyone's guess how soon these Residents will be able to cross. All three crossings at Tonto Creek that empties into the North End of Roosevelt Lake are flooded. The only other exit route would be through 30 miles of dirt road and deep washes to connect to the Young Hwy near Globe.
