Crash caused by red-light runner

PHOENIX -- An 18-year-old woman was killed and several others were hurt in a multi-car wreck that kept a Valley intersection closed Wednesday night and into Thursday morning.

A total of 12 people were involved in the wreck at 43rd Avenue and Cactus Road late Wednesday night.

Tow trucks arrived on the scene to clear the intersection just before 6 a.m. Thursday.

Police announced that the driver of the car investigators say caused the wreck is being charged with murder.

43 year-old Armando Garcia Jacobo was arrested by Phoenix Police immediately after he was released from the hospital Thursday evening.

Jacobo is charged with 1 count of 2nd degree murder, and 7 counts of aggravated assault.

Investigators believe it started when a Nissan sports car heading north on 43rd Avenue blew through a red light.

The vehicle collided with two vehicles that were driving eastbound on Cactus Road.

Witnesses rushed in to help the victims.

Eight people were taken to the hospital, including the 43-year-old driver of the Nissan, Jacobo.

A 16-year-old girl is listed in serious condition and a 14-year-old girl is in critical condition. Both are expected to survive.

Nora Risha, 18, was ejected from the vehicle she was in and sustained fatal injuries.

Risha graduated from McClintock High School in May. The injured 14-year-old reportedly is a freshman at McClintock. Counselors were at the high school Thursday to help grieving students.

Police say Jacobo was impaired.
