PHOENIX -- During monsoon, the Valley gets hit hard with powerful microbursts, packing winds moving faster than 75 miles per hour. These winds are so strong, they can take down up to a dozen power lines at one time.
To get read for possible power outages this monsoon, Salt River Project launched a pole inspection and replacement program. About 12,000 poles per year valleywide go through a five-point inspection to ensure only the strongest poles are in use.
Also, SRP wants to stop the domino effect by replacing every third wooden pole with a steel pole. They hopes this will cut down on the amount of poles that are damaged with each storm.
