APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. -- It’s not the Friday night the Langenwalter-De Jong family envisioned heading into Labor Day weekend.

“Our plans changed considerably now,” said Dick De Jong.  “We’re going to be doing nothing but moving furniture, cleaning up mud.”

From cement blocks to sweeping, they’re doing whatever they can to keep the water out of their Apache Junction home.

“We started putting up barriers right away,” said Diane Langenwalter-De Jong.

Unfortunately, some of the mud and slush already made it inside.  Langenwalter-De Jong says in recent years flooding on South Malcolm has become a serious and predictable problem.

“Every time it rains, this is what happens,” she told 3TV.

Not far from her neighborhood, Friday night’s downpour turned some roads into rivers, making for a treacherous rush hour commute.  Our cameras caught one driver stranded near University and Meridian.

“My car shut off and wouldn’t start; I got stuck,” the driver told 3TV.

“Nobody knows how to drive in rain, here in Arizona,” said Sarah Zweber of Apache Junction.

From streets to stores, some minor flooding inside the Big 5 on Apache Trail forced the business to close for the rest of the night.

While moments of calm produced a double rain around sunset, much of the monsoon storm has left a massive mess.
