SUN CITY WEST, Ariz. -- Tis the season in the Valley of the Sun of brutal heat punctuated by powerful and often punishing storms.
Wednesday night much of the Valley got slammed with heavy rains and high winds as thunder and lightening filled up the sky.
In Sun City West one home took a direct hit from a thunder bolt, triggering a fire that completely gutted the residence.
"I could see a lot of flames," neighbor Sharon Driscoll said. "The whole back of the house was already caving in. It was really terrible, kind of like a nightmare."
The couple that owns the home is out of town. They have been notified and are now making arrangements to return to the Valley.
For her part neighbor Sharon Driscoll is grateful that fire fighters were able to keep the intense blaze from spreading to her home.
"Horrendous" is the way Sharon described the flames, "never seen anything like that that close."
