PHOENIX -- Heavy thunderstorms erupted over the metro Phoenix area on Tuesday morning, and as the storms moved north into the mountains of Maricopa County, we saw more than 4 inches of rain in many locations. The result was widespread flash flooding.

Several rescues were performed by safety officials throughout the day and as of this writing, no injuries were reported.

Around the Valley, many locations got more than 1 inch of rain. Sky Harbor Airport even got into the act with 0.25 inch of rainfall during a line of afternoon storms that rolled over the airport. That puts our yearly total at the airport at 1.85 inch, which is about 3 inches below normal. We’re also behind on our summer thunderstorm rain.

The outlook for the next couple of days will continue with chances for mainly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms for the Valley. However, the chance for rain is going down and it doesn’t look like we’ll see such a major event as was observed this morning.
