PHOENIX -- The amount of rain that fell in and around Anthem Tuesday night was nothing short of amazing. Most of the rain totals were in the range of 1 to 1.5 inches. These are automated stations that instantly transmit the information to the Weather Service and other first responders, as well as to the news media. We rely on this network to be able to pass along the best information available.

However, not all rain gauges are electronically connected yet. There are other observers that the Weather Service uses that simply phone in or email their daily weather reports or pass info along when it is relevant.

Jim Manley in Anthem has one of those stations and the rain gauge at his house got 5.05 inches of rain during the storm Tuesday evening. The Weather Service has verified the number and it is in line with another outrageous total: 5.52 inches. That's what was reported by our ForecastNet weather station (WeatherBug) at Anthem School. We had that information and showed it on the air, but said that we didn't think it was accurate. Why? Mainly because it's a lot of rain, especially considering how all the other rain reports in the area were much lower than that. Our station also recorded a 67 mph wind gust which verified the storm as severe.
