TEMPE, Ariz. -- Police are investigating whether foul play was involved in a house fire that left a 20-year-old woman in critical condition.
The fire took place Saturday at a home near McClintock and Southern.
When fire crews arrived they found a lot of thick, black smoke coming from the home. They entered the residence and eventually found a woman about 10 feet from the front door.
The woman was unconscious and had burns on her body.
Rescuers were able to remove the woman from the home and transport her to the Arizona Burn Center.
Fire crews say finding a victim actually makes fighting a fire more difficult.
“It’s a balance when you locate a victim, as soon as you put water on it it produces steam, so they had to control the water use so that they were able to get the victim out and finish the search,” said Assistant Fire Chief John Valenzuela.
Firefighters say the home is likely a total loss.
Authorities believe the fire was started intentionally, but are still working to determine exactly what happened.
