PHOENIX – An 11-year-old boy drowned in a backyard pool Wednesday afternoon.

Phoenix police officers and fire personnel responded to a report of a drowning at a home near 107th Avenue and Buckeye Road at about 2:45 p.m.

According to Phoenix police, Ivan Nunez and his brother were going swimming in an above-ground pool. Ivan, described as a good swimmer, entered the pool and attempted to remove the plastic cover.

It is unknown at this time if Ivan became entangled with the cover thus restricting his movements, according to Sgt. Steve Martos with the Phoenix Police Department. The Phoenix Fire Department said that type of incident is unusual.

Ivan's 10-year-old brother attempted to assist him but was unable to provide help on his own.

The victim's 15-year-old brother was called from the home and was able to remove Ivan from the pool.

Emergency personnel performed CPR before Ivan was flown to Phoenix Children's Hospital.

He was transported to Phoenix Children's Hospital where he later died.

Eduardo Quintana said he could not believe what had happened to his friend until he saw Ivan getting into the helicopter.

"Me and him, we always used to play around, joke," Quintana said. "To me, he was a very good person. He was athletic, and knowing that he has passed can break my heart because he was a real good friend."

According to neighbors, the family has only had the pool for a couple of weeks.
