8-year-old who was abducted was able to escape

MESA, Ariz. (AP) -- An 8-year-old girl abducted Sunday while riding her bike near her apartment complex in Mesa was able to escape within minutes of being forced into a car by a man, authorities said.

Robert Curtis Milliron, 22, was booked into jail on suspicion of kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment and other charges, according to Mesa police.

Court documents released Monday stated that Milliron couldn't explain why he allegedly took the girl, other than to say that he had no "sexual intent for the victim."

Police said Milliron told officers he was lonely and looking for a companion.

It was unclear Monday if he has a lawyer yet.

The girl was able to slip away from her captor Sunday afternoon after he sped away from the abduction scene, drove down an alley in a neighborhood and crashed his car into a brick wall, police said.

"The fact that he was able to get her into his car and leave was terrifying enough," police spokesman Tony Landato said. "We were very thankful that things unfolded as they did."

Landato said Milliron pulled the girl off her bike and threw her into the front seat of his car, prompting witnesses to call police.

After the girl escaped, Landato said Milliron ran off and was taken into custody about 45 minutes later at a check-cashing business. Police said Milliron told officers that he changed his clothes, shaved and got a haircut after fleeing in an attempt to avoid detection.

The girl suffered a minor burn to one of her arms when the car's air bag deployed, police said.
