PHOENIX -- A dog that was stolen out of its owner's truck at a Phoenix Circle K Tuesday night was found severely injured and locked in a portable toilet.

Delbert Weaver said Keelo was taken when he went into the convenience store near 19th Avenue and Deer Valley Road at around 7:30 p.m. He said he left the windows cracked and the air conditioning running.

Keelo was reunited with his family Thursday morning. They said he is injured and traumatized, but he is alive and going to be well.

In addition to social media and TV coverage, Weaver and his girlfriend, Michele Bailey, credit Keelo's return to a man they are calling "our angel."

The couple said Rance Anderson saw the story on TV Wednesday night and went to the Circle K to find the flier with their contact phone number. He called and said that he had seen the dog at a construction site that morning.

Anderson said the superintendent of the construction project had found the dog locked inside a portable toilet. The pit bull-American bulldog mix was not wearing a collar or ID tags. The workers gave the dog water and looked after it.

Anderson texted the owners early Thursday morning and said he had taken the flier to the job site and showed it to the superintendent. They then contacted a worker who had taken the dog home for the night.

"We were told that it was obvious that Keelo had been abused," Bailey wrote in an email to 3TV. "That either he was in a dog fight or just badly attacked by a human."

Keelo was returned to his owners a few hours later and they took him to a veterinarian.

The veterinarian believes Keelo most likely was shot behind his left ear and the bullet came out his right cheek. Bailey said his feet were scraped up and he is moving with difficulty. He is on medication for the pain and incredibly lucky to be alive.

"We may never know who took him or exactly what happened," Bailey said. "We can only speculate that someone stole him because of his breed and his look."

Bailey and Weaver said Keelo is a very tough and unique-looking dog but is really very friendly, describing him as a "kind hearted big baby."

"I don't know what kind of person steals a happy, healthy, spoiled animal only to abuse him and lock him up in a portable toilet in the middle of nowhere and leave him to die," Bailey said.

Police are investigating.
