PHOENIX -- If you bank with Wells Fargo, you might want to grab some non-perishable food items next time you go to the bank.
Wells Fargo is teaming up with Saint Mary's Food bank to sponsor a huge statewide summer food drive.
The food drive is one of the only statewide efforts to be held in Arizona with collection bins in all Community Banking stores throughout the state. It goes on for the next two weeks.
But even if you don't bank at Wells Fargo, you can stop by any of its branches to make a donation, or donate directly to Saint Mary's Food Bank.
The need for donated food is great right now, and the shelves at the St. Mary's Food Bank are almost empty. Summer is the hardest time to keep the shelves stocked, with kids out of school and receiving most of their meals at home. Also many of the regular donors go on vacation.
Wells Fargo is happy to be a part of the effort, says John Vasquez, Wells Fargo Community Banking District Manager. "During the winter, food banks are full," he says. "But during the summertime, they get completely empty. So Wells Faro is teaming up. We have 259 locations that will have those boxes. Not only can our customers donate, but non-customers can come in, as well as team members will be having fun, friendly competitions to get those boxes filled this year."
In the past, the drive has brought in more than 60 tons of food. "We're looking to beat that this year," says Vasquez.
You can also donate to St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance directly, at 2831 N. 31st Ave., Phoenix.
Donations will benefit members of the Association of Arizona Food Banks.
Those who wish to donate cash can send checks to their local food banks or to the Association of Arizona Food Banks.
Donations may also be made online at www.azfoodbanks.org or sent to 2100 N. Central Ave., Ste. 230, Phoenix, Ariz. 85004.
