PHOENIX -- A shooting suspect is in custody following a standoff at an east Phoenix home that lasted most of Friday afternoon.

According to Phoenix police, 41-year-old Nicholas Oakes shot and killed his neighbor over an ongoing dispute and then barricaded himself in his townhome near 52nd Street and Thomas.

Three schools had to be placed on lockdown while police searched for the suspect.  Once authorities learned that Oakes had locked himself in his home they released the lockdown on the schools.

After more than six hours of negotiations, Oakes was restrained and taken away in handcuffs.

Detectives now plan to interview the man, and depending on the circumstances, he may have to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Oakes has been charged with first-degree murder.
