Phoenix -- A Valley-wide search is underway for a man accused of assaulting a DPS officer during a DUI traffic stop on New Year's Day.
DPS detectives are searching for 25-year-old Rafael Reyna III. They say Reyna was driving eastbound on U.S. 60 near Extension Road around 2:45 a.m., when the DPS motor officer pulled him over for suspected DUI.
As the officer began to arrest Reyna, detectives say the suspect attacked the officer, hitting him multiple times in the face, and causing so much damage the officer had to be taken to the hospital. The officer was treated and released, and is now at home recovering.
Reyna reportedly fled the scene with a handcuff still on his left wrist. DPS has located the car in which he fled, but Reyna is still at large.
Reyna is a convicted felon and has a history of violence toward law enforcement. He also has known gang affiliations.
"(He's) dangerous enough to get the U.S. Marshals office involved," says DPS Officer Carrick Cook. "We're going all out with this. This is someone who has a history of violence toward law enforcement and is important enough for us to pull out all the stops."
A $10K reward is being offered for information leading to Reyna's arrest and conviction.
