SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- A Scottsdale mom says she's fighting an uphill battle with her doctor's office and it's all over a bill.
The bill is for $768. But here's something you may not know, if you receive medical services, the bill is sent to your insurance, and your insurance company pays what some consider is an inflated price.
However, if you pay, the amount is usually less, and that's the problem Lacy Davis is having.
Lacy is a new mom who loves her daughter, Kate. "She makes me the happiest person," Lacy says.
But as it is for most new parents, a bundle of joy comes with a bundle of new decisions.
"Having a baby changes your lifestyle," Lacy says.
And one lifestyle change for Lacy was deciding to leave the workforce once Kate entered the world so she could become a full time mom.
"I was under the impression that I would have insurance through the end of January because that's what I was told," she says.
Since Lacy thought she would be insured through January, she wanted to make sure her daughter had all of her checkups before January came and went.
"They check her out, do the weight and height and head circumference and get her four month vaccines," she says.
However, Lacy was shocked when she got the bill a few months later.
"The statement total for the well-check visit and the five vaccines that she received was totaled $778, because Lacy's daughter wasn't insured, like she thought.
She immediately called the pediatrician’s office and when she asked why the bill was so high she was told it was because that was the insurance rate.
However, with no insurance, the bill would be substantially lower.
“They told me for the office visit it would be $177 and for all five of those vaccines it would be $85.32 totaling $262." she says.
Obviously Lacy wanted to pay the lower amount, but she says she was told no because the bill had already been submitted and denied by the insurance.
"I just don't think it's fair that they're charging me, you know, triple the amount, when I told them I'd be willing to pay the self-pay no insurance rate of $262."
Frustrated, Lacy contacted 3 On Your Side
"They need to accept my cash payment of $262.38 and be done with it," she says.
We contacted the doctor’s office which immediately looked into the matter and then called Lacy.
They apologized to her and agreed to accept the cash payment, something Lacy says probably wouldn't have happened if 3 On Your Side didn't get involved.
"I didn't feel like there was anything else I could do, and I was hoping you guys could step in and help resolve a situation that really shouldn't have gone that far," she says.
