MESA, Ariz. -- A police dog was injured and a suspect ended up dead in a neighborhood near Broadway Road and Stapley Drive Saturday night.

No officers were injured.

The K9 is recovering at home after undergoing surgery.

It started just after 7 p.m. when a person confronted a 32-year-old Chad Bogle who was apparently burglarizing a neighbor's home.

Bogle reportedly waved a handgun at the neighbor and the neighbor called police.

Police said they were on scene in about two minutes.

Police said Bogle ignored commands from officers, who fired several bean bag rounds at him.

The K9 "Jake" was released into the home where he bit the Bogle who then barricaded himself in the home. Jake had cuts and stab wounds and was rushed to an emergency veterinary facility.

Bogle reportedly displayed a handgun and an officer fired at least one round.

Witnesses said they heard about four gunshots.

Police are trying to determine if Bogle was killed by the officer or he killed himself. A handgun was found lying next to him.

Mesa Police Sgt. Tony Landato said Saturday that Bogle was in possession of an Arizona Department of Corrections card and parole officer information, but Landato did not have detailed information on the man's criminal history.

The neighbor, who works for the homeowner, said the homeowner is out of town. Police said they confirmed that with the homeowner while at the scene.
