PHOENIX -- Police say a man who was shot last week by the suspect in Monday's fatal officer-involved shooting has died.
Mario Valenzuela, 39, was shot in the chest Feb. 25 in a parking lot near 40th Avenue and Camelback Road, according to police. He succumbed to his injuries Thursday.
While Valenzuela was still fighting for his life, a warrant was issued for the arrest of suspected shooter 28-year-old William Thornton.
Phoenix police detectives John Hobbs and A.J. Casados attempted to locate Thornton on Monday.
They spotted the man driving a car near 41st Avenue and Camelback Road and followed him to 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road, where his car collided with another vehicle. Police said Thornton tried to flee on foot and opened fire on the detectives as they arrived on scene.
Both Hobbs and Casados were shot. Although mortally wounded, Hobbs shot and killed Thornton.
Hobbs later died at a local hospital. Casados was treated and released.
