PHOENIX -- One person has died and another remains in critical condition after their car collided with another car when they ran a red light, according to the Phoenix Police Department.
About 9:45 p.m. Saturday, a Nissan Altima was reportedly traveling east on Cactus Road and failed to stop at the red light at North 43rd Avenue.
The Nissan collided with a Kia Optima, which was driving north on 43rd Avenue during a green light, police said.
The two occupants of the Nissan were transported to a local hospital, where the passenger succumbed to her injuries. She has been identified as Jean A. Kerr, 74.
The driver was transported with life-threatening injuries and remains in critical condition.
Police said both the driver and passenger were not wearing seatbelts and their airbags did not deploy.
The driver of the Kia had minor injuries and has been released from the hospital, police said. She was wearing her seatbelt and her airbags deployed.
Detectives evaluated both drivers at the scene and determined they were not impaired.
Witnesses said it appeared drag racing was involved, but police said the investigation is ongoing.
