PHOENIX --Things are getting heavy at the Phoenix Zoo!
The zoo has been running a contest to see who could guess the combined weight of the Zoo's six tortoises. Well, that contest ended Tuesday and Yetta Gibson was live on Good Morning Arizona with the big weigh-in.
It was no easy task to get these big fellows weighed. In fact, it took the muscle of half a dozen staffers to hoist the some of the giant creatures onto the scale.
"They're like tanks," one staffer told us. "They don't go around anything; they go over or through. You can see even though he's a little scared, and he's a little perturbed with us, he's not trying to bite anyone, and he's being a good sport about it. I think he thinks it's a game."
After the morning's extended weigh-in, the zoo announced the combined weight of the six tortoises. Drum roll, please! The grand total was a whopping 1,949 pounds!
The entry submission with the number closest to the actual weight, will win a one year zoo membership, and a behind-the-scenes tour of the tortoise encounter.
The Phoenix Zoo is home to Galapagos tortoises; Ralph, Mary and Junior as well as home to three Aldabra tortoises; Ali, Low-Dome and High-Dome.
Ralph and Mary's most recent offspring, still yet to be named, will also make an appearance to show the difference in size. Hatched just last August, the baby is about the size of your palm.
